What is Automated Breast Ultrasound? Ultrasound has long been known as an excellent additional tool in finding and diagnosing breast lesions. In comparison to the hand-held method of breast ultrasound the new automated breast ultrasound called the SomoVu can construct a 3-D image of the breast with as little as two scans. The nipple is used as a legend and the exact area in the breast can be pinpointed. This is expecially helpful to surgeons and in situations where a suspicious area is being monitored from year to year. How does it Work A stabilizing membrane is attached to the ultrasound scanner and warm lotion is applied to the breast. The scanner is placed on the breast and the technologist presses a single button to begin the scan. First, a preview scan automatically determines the patient’s breast tissue signature and sets the ideal ultrasound imaging parameters. This is followed by the actual image acquisition scan of the breast. The scan of the breast takes approximately 60 seconds. After all images are acquired, the patient exam is complete and the patient leaves the room. It takes about 15 minutes for the program to process all views for the radiologist to review. Does Breast Ultrasound Replace Mammography? Mammography is the best screening method today to find breast cancer in its early stages, but it has considerable limitations in women with dense glandular tissue. The Somo-Vu by U-Systems provides a different way of looking at the breast that cannot be attained from other breast diagnostic modalities. The Challenge of Dense Breast Tissue Breast tissue density has been found to be a strong indicator for breast cancer risk. Women with radiologically dense breasts, having a large proportion of ductal and connective tissue, are at substantially higher risk of developing breast cancer than women whose breasts are radiologically lucent with a large proportion of replaced fatty tissue. Some 40% of women in Europe and the U.S. have some amount of dense breast tissue. In Asia, the numbers rise to 60-70%. Breast cancer risk can be 5-6 times higher for women with significant breast densities compared to women with no dense structures. Today, 98% of women whose breast cancer is found and treated early with no spreading beyond the breast will survive. This is why Memorial Hospital of Converse County and radiologist Dr. Dennis Yutani feel so strongly about providing world class breast diagnostics. Patient Comfort a Priority The scanning of the breast causes very little discomfort to the patient and each scan only takes about 60 seconds. We Offer You Outstanding Service!
